Overview Of The Port Of Ytre Norskoya
About Ytre Norskoya
Ytre Norskøya is an island on the north-west coast of Spitsbergen, part of the Svalbard archipelago in Norway.
Willem Barents first saw land here in 1596 and christened it "Spitsbergen".
Ytre Norskøya is in the middle of what used to be the Dutch whaling area in the early 1600s. The station is located by the sound Norskøysundet, between the islands of Ytre Norskøya and Indre Norskøya.
The remains of nine blubber ovens lie along the beach in the bay, and the area is one of the largest burial grounds in Svalbard, with 165 graves.
