Overview Of The Port Of Ullapool

About Ullapool
Ullapool is a small town in Ross and Cromarty, Highland, Scotland, in the United Kingdom.

Take a scenic boat trip, you may spot local wildlife such as seals, dolphins, whales, seabirds and eagles.

Ullapool Museum (generally open late spring-early autumn) is housed in a former church, dating back to 1829 and has both permanent and temporary exhibitions.

The Arthur Fowler Memorial Clock is situated on West Argyle Street, this clock was once the central part of a roundabout in the days when horses and carts used Quay Lane. It is said the clock has not kept such good time since it was moved from its original position. The clock commemorates Sir J Arthur Fowler, a local landowner.

Knockan Crag is a line of cliffs in Assynt, 21km north of Ullapool. Scottish Natural Heritage manages the Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve and provides an interpretation centre, car park and various walking options.

Corrieshalloch Gorge is located on the Droma River 20km south of Ullapool. It is 1½ km long, 60m deep and formed at the end of the last ice age by rapid erosion caused by melt water. The 46m Falls of Measach can be viewed from a viewing platform and a Victorian suspension footbridge. The gorge and surrounding area are owned by the National Trust for Scotland.

Take a ferry across the Minch, a strait which separates the north-west Highlands, and the northern Inner Hebrides, from Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides.

The area is a paradise for walkers, hikers and nature lovers. A walk in the North West Highlands Geopark takes visitors up the beautiful limestone valley of the Allt nan Uamh to the famous Bone Caves, where the bones of bears, reindeer and wolves have been discovered. The walk is roughly 4km, on mainly a good path.

Tee off at Ullapool Golf Club or do a spot of fishing or bird watching.

Further afield, places of interest include Castle Leod near Strathpeffer, Loch Ness and Inverewe Botanical Gardens, located just to the north of Poolewe in Wester Ross.

Ullapool has lots of gift, craft and art shops selling a range of local items and artworks.

Local delicacies include Scottish tablet (fudge), black pudding and 'cullen skink' (thick haddock soup). Restaurants serve a variety of food including typical British 'pub grub', fresh fish and seafood, meat dishes, vegetarian options as well as international favourites such as Indian and Chinese.
