Overview Of The Port Of Tartus

About Tartus
Tartus is a city on the Mediterranean coast of Syria in Western Asia. It is the second largest port city in Syria and the largest city in Tartus Governorate.

Note: Ongoing travel advice from the Foreign Office advises against all travel to Syria (updated 2020).

The former Romanesque cathedral of Notre-Dame of Tartus, which dates back to the 12th century, is now the site of a museum housing many relics from Syria's past.

The historic centre of Tartus consists of more recent buildings built on and inside the walls of the Crusader-era Templar fortress, whose moat still separates this old town from the modern city on its northern and eastern sides.

Marqab Castle, the historic town of Safita, Arwad island and castle, Beit el-Baik Palace and Hosn Suleiman Temple all lie within an hour's reach of Tartus.

Day trips to Damascus are popular with visitors, via ship excursions.

Souvenirs of the area include mosaics, glass and cloth depicting folk heroes, silk brocade and many types of sweets.

Fresh fish, seafood, Syrian meze, salads and kebabs are all popular local dishes.
