About Skiathos
Skiathos is a small Greek island in the northwest Aegean Sea. It is the westernmost island in the Northern Sporades group in southern Europe.
Skiathos does not have any inland villages, instead the island has the main town and capital, Chora (Skiathos Town) and lots of little seaside settlements which have been developed for tourism.
Skiathos has many trails for both bikers and walkers to follow, which lead to gorgeous beaches, the town centre and various attractions, taking in the breathtaking scenery and picturesque island beauty.
Parts of the film "Mamma Mia" was filmed in Skiathos.
Take a visit to Il Kastro, the largest medieval town from between the 12th to the middle of the 19th century. It is located on a steep cliff, making it difficult to reach and easy to defend against enemy attacks. Only one of the churches still remains intact between the ruins.
Papadiamandis House is a small museum. Once the house of the poet and writer Alexander Papadiamandis, one of the greatest in Greek history, it is now a well preserved view into the lifestyle of the writer.
Follow cobbled pathways to the town centre where you will find numerous shops in the old shopping quarters along with street cafés and restaurants.
Popular souvenirs include local handicrafts made from olive wood, jewellery and ceramics.
Take a boat trip and explore the surrounding tiny islands and hard to reach, quiet beaches.
There is a good variety of beaches on Skiathos, the south side of the island has sandy beaches with calm waters whilst the beaches in the north are less crowded. Koukounaries is the most famous beach on the island. Other options include Aselinos beach, Troulos Beach which is ideal for families
and Megali Ammos beach, easily be accessed by foot from Skiathos Town.
There is lots of choice when it comes to eating. From fast food outlets selling “pita gyro” with tzatziki, tomato, onion, fried potatoes and meat to fresh fish and seafood dishes, Greek meze, salads and even pizza.
