About Sandefjord
Sandefjord is a city in Vestfold county, Norway in Northern Europe.
The city is known for its rich Viking history and the prosperous whaling industry.
The surrounding area is perfect for hiking along the coast or through the wood. The town centre is small enough to be able to walk around, with a variety of parks to enjoy.
The famous Gokstad ship was excavated in 1880 and gave a reliable picture of what a Viking longship would have looked like. Gaia, based at Gokstad kystlag, at Framnes, is a full-scale replica of the Gokstad ship from the 9th century, and was built in 1990.
Sandefjord was occupied by Germany during WWII and a visit to the Coastal Fort at Folehavn is where the armaments can still be seen.
Norway’s first town from the Viking age is located just outside Sandefjord, near Larvik town. Kaupang was also one of only a few Viking towns in the whole of Scandinavia. See the interesting exhibition at Sjøfarts Museum just outside the centre of Larvik (25 minutes by bus from the harbour).
Sandefjord was previously a famous health resort, offering salt water sea baths, mud and sulphur baths. Around 50,000 people visited the bath from 1837 to 1939 and today the bath's building has been restored and now hosts cultural events and various activities.
More adventurous visitors can experience Scandinavia’s largest outdoor climbing park, located less than an hours drive from the harbour.
Oslo can easily be reached by coach for daytrips, it is around a 90 minute hours drive away from the harbour.
Sandefjord has a bustling shopping area, local and Norwegian specialities such as pewter, silverware, designer jewellery and knitted sweaters all make good buys.
Sandefjord boasts a long coastline, numerous rocks and sandy beaches. Sightseeing boats offer charter for groups.
Activities to enjoy in the area include rafting, climbing, canoeing, cycling and horseback riding.
Fresh fish, international favourites such as pasta, pizza, burgers and Chinese as well as traditional Norwegian dishes such as 'kjøttkaker' (meatcakes),'kjøttboller' (meatballs) and 'svinekoteletter' (pork chops) can all be found on local menus.
