Overview Of The Port Of Roses

About Roses
Roses is located on the Costa Brava, Catalonia in Spain. It is situated on the coast at the northern end of the Gulf of Roses, surrounded by two natural parks.

Take a guided tour of the Citadel, this 16th century fortified military enclosure, at the eastern end of the town, contains the remains of the original town of Rhodes, dating back to 776 BC. The Citadel Museum (el Museu de la Ciutadella de Roses) explains its history and treasures.

The ruins of Trinitat Castle, built on Poncella Point was built in a five-pointed star shape. Next to these ruins stands Roses lighthouse, one of the many dotted along the broken outline of the Costa Brava.

In the centre of town, visit the parish church of Santa María y la Casa Mallol, inside you will find ornamental ceilings, wrought iron elements and stained glass by local craftsmen.

Glass bottom boat trips, snorkelling and diving provide an excellent chance to get to know the large numbers of animal and plant species living in the waters around here.

Nearby places to visit include Cadaqués, Empuries, Figueres, the medieval town of Pals, and Girona,

Walking in the mountains is a popular pastime and visitors can get maps and route information from the local tourist office.

Roses is known for it's lovely beaches. The smaller bays just past the harbour, away from the centre of town offer a quieter beach experience. Platja Palangres, popular with the locals, includes a tree-shaded picnic area. Canyelles Petites and Canyelles Almadrava Grosses are 3km and 4km away from Roses respectively and both have golden sand, crystal-clear water and are sheltered from the north wind.

Most of the shops in Roses can be found near the beachfront area. There are a few good markets around the town centre selling locally made souvenirs such as jewellery, leather goods, and fabric.

Popular dishes include Catalan-style cod (with raisins and pine nuts), 'escalivada' (grilled vegetables), 'esqueixada' (salted cod salad), chicken with spiny lobster and rabbit with snails or try the local Roses speciality 'suquet de peix' (fish stew).
Cruise Terminal
