Overview Of The Port Of Ponza
About Ponza
Ponza is the largest of the Italian Pontine Islands archipelago, located 33km south of Cape Circeo in the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Inland the scenery is striking, featuring mountains and vine-clad hills that boast sweeping views back down to the coast. There is one main road that snakes a panoramic path from the port up through to the north of the island and is regularly served by the island’s minibuses.
See wild orchids and rare trees at the private botanical garden Giardino Botanico Ponziano, located near to the Grotta di Ulisse o Del Sangue (Cave of Ulysses).
Lookout Hill is the highest hill and is the place to visit for breathtaking views of the island.
Take a boat excursion to the secluded coves and caves such as Grotto Azure and Grotta della Maga Circe mentioned in "The Odyssey".
Scuba diving and diving are popular sporting activities. Just off the coast there are many odd rock formations in interesting shapes as well natural rock arches and several Faraglioni - giant stacks of solid rock in the sea.
Popular beaches on the island include Spaggia delle felci and Spaggia Di Chaia di Luna, access to which is through an ancient Roman tunnel.
There is not a huge choice of tourist and souvenir shops here, however minimarkets do sell a range of items such as food, household goods, linens, souvenirs, postcards and tourist guides.
Ponza's cuisine is primarily based around the sea - lobster, marinated sea food and grilled fish with tomato, garlic and onions or cooked Neapolitan style. Other island specialities are lentil soup ('lenticchie alla ponzese') and rabbit as well as Ponza's own regional wine.
