About Parga
Parga is a town and municipality located in the north western part of the regional unit of Preveza in Epirus, north-western Greece.
Parga town is situated in a sheltered bay and is surrounded by mountains covered with olive groves.
Parga is a very small town and very walkable. Boats leave every now and then to the nearby beaches of Lichnos and Valtos. Car and scooter rental is available in town to explore the surrounding area.
The old Greek Fortress dates back to the 14th century and perches on a headland separating Parga town centre and Valtos beach. It is in part a ruined castle, there are many steep drops into the sea without barriers so care must be taken.
Wonderful views over Valtos Beach, the tower of Vlacherna Monastry, Paxos and Antipaxos can be seen from the Tourkopazaro Road.
The Vlacherna Monastry, a deserted Byzantine monastery is located at the far end of Valtos Beach.
There are almost 100 small churches scattered around the town and hills around Parga.
Ali Pasha castle ruins is located the nearby village of Anthousa. From the top you can see other villages near Parga, Corfu on a clear day, and the fortress of Parga which Ali Pasha tried to shoot with his cannons. An old lady occasionally sells delicious herbs and spices (such as mint, herbal tea, oregano and different spice blends), so have some small change with you.
Day trips to the neighbouring islands of Paxos, Antipaxos and Corfu can be taken in the summer months.
There are plenty of beaches to choose from including Krioneri beach, which is near to the town centre, to the west beyond the castle is Valtos beach and 4km to the west of the town is Lichnos beach.
Parga is excellent for cultural markets and shops which line the narrow streets, filled with local arts and crafts. Pottery, antiques and local Parga honey are popular gifts to take home with you.
Traditional dishes include 'stifado' (meat and onion stew), 'moussaka', stuffed tomatoes, veal with red sauce and Greek salads.
