Overview Of The Port Of Lemnos

About Lemnos
Lemnos is a Greek Island in the northern part of the Aegean Sea, in the Eastern Mediterranean.

There are many interesting things to see around Lemnos, it is a place with a long history and strong references in the Greek mythology. The myth says that this was the island where god Hephaestus had his copper workroom, which is why there was an ancient town dedicated to his honour, Ifestia. The oldest town in Europe, Ancient Poliochni, dates from the beginning of the 3rd century BC.

On the north eastern side, there is the Ancient Kavirio, a place strongly connected to secret religious ceremonies. Directly below Kavirio is the Cave of Philoctetes, the legendary hero who was abandoned there on the way to Troy and the Medieval Castle can be seen on the hill above Myrina.

The most popular beaches in Lemnos are located on the western side of the island and include Plati, which is only 2km from Myrina, Romaikos Gialos, Riha Nera and Agios Ioannis. Beaches on the eastern side are more secluded and are the best spots for windsurfing and kitesurfing, particularly the beaches of Keros and Zematas.

Most of the shops of Lemnos can be found in Myrina, specifically on the main thoroughfare of Kyda, a paved street lined with stores selling clothes, shoes and local products such as cheese, honey, wine, ouzo and sweets.

Folk art shops sell a variety of fine woven fabrics, ceramics, wood carvings, embroideries, silk and fine potteries.

In the main villages of Lemnos, traditional shops selling local products and tourist items can also be found.

Local dishes to try include rabbit stifado, moussaka, Greek meze and salads as well as a variety of meat and fish dishes including freshly caught calamari and fresh, homemade breads.
Cruise Terminal
Cruise ships dock at the Port of Myrina, which is the main town on the island.

Minibuses/shuttles may be available to take passengers into town although the distance (around 20 minutes) is walkable.

Transport on the island is good with local buses connecting all the main villages and towns. There are also taxis and vehicles for rent as well as boats that go to the various beaches.

There is a long shopping street which extends from the port area, selling a variety of goods and souvenirs.
