About Le Lavandou
Le Lavandou is a commune in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in south eastern France. Le Lavandou is named after the nearby lavender fields.
The quayside promenade, Gabriel Peri, offers colourful cafes, a boules court and a restaurant, which was built in the 19th century. The old village rises up several steep streets lined with craft shops and cafes. The main square opens onto the promenade which fronts the main beach.
The fountain is the symbol of life and in each village in Provence you will come across a fountain around a little square or in the shade of a plane-tree, Le Lavandou has 12 such fountains.
Other places of interest include the Church of Saint Louis, built in 1855, the Grand Jardin and the Painters Trail, where visitors can learn more about neo-impressionism and the artists who lived and worked in the area.
Le Lavandou has 12 beaches along the Corniche des Maures to the east. There are several beautiful coves, each of them with different coloured sand. Each offers a variety of facilities including wind-surfing, fishing, diving and canoeing. A beach train travels from the port to Cap Negre and Pramousquier.
Hire a bike and explore the area via the protected 100km cycle path in Corniche des Maures.
Visit the nearby village of Bormes-les-Mimosas or take the 40 minute ferry crossing to the Îles d'Hyères.
There are many walks and hikes in the Massif des Maures, the Iles d’Or and inland Var, starting from both Le Lavandou and Bormes-les-Mimosas.
There is a Thursday morning market in Le Lavandou, selling a range of local produce and products.
The local shops along the small pedestrian streets in town sell a range of souvenirs and gifts as well as clothing, electrical items and homewares.
Fresh fish and seafood, especially local loup, salmon and mussels and bouillabaisse, the traditional Provençal fish stew are popular on menus. International favourites such as Italian and Thai can also be found in town, along with fast food eateries and cafes for smaller snacks.
