Overview Of The Port Of Latakia

About Latakia
Latakia is the principal port city of Syria in Western Asia, as well as the capital of the Latakia Governorate.

Note: November 2013 - The Foreign Office advises against all travel to Syria.

Due to the distance between attractions, downtown area and beach etc, much of Latakia is best explored by taxi, the Corniche however can be walked along. Latakia has a quite good bus system. Destinations on buses are labelled in Arabic, but are numbered and follow specific routes.

The Latakia region is known for it's diverse landscapes, from mountains to sandy beaches.

Saladin Castle (or the Citadel of Salah Ed-Din) is a castle 30km east of Latakia. It is set in high mountainous terrain on a ridge between two deep ravines, surrounded by forest. It has been fortified since at least the mid 10th century.

The ruins of Ugarit are close enough to see on a day trip from Latakia (around 20km away). This ancient Phoenician city lays claim to developing one of the first written alphabets in the world.

The Museum of Latakia houses some interesting artefacts about the history of languages.

Krak des Chevaliers is a Crusader castle, UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important preserved medieval castles in the world. The site was first inhabited in the 11th century by a settlement of Kurds and lies just under 2 hours away from Latakia.

The Citadel of Aleppo is a large medieval fortified palace in the centre of the old city of Aleppo, just under 3 hours away. It is considered to be one of the oldest and largest castles in the world. Usage of the Citadel hill dates back at least to the middle of the 3rd millennium BC. The Citadel is part of the Ancient City of Aleppo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There are free public beaches but they tend not to be particularly clean or safe to use. Some resort hotels may allow non guests to use their beaches for a charge.

Souvenirs of the area include mosaics, glass and cloth depicting folk heroes, silk brocade and many types of sweets.

Fresh fish, seafood, Syrian meze and kebabs are all popular, local dishes.
Cruise Terminal
Cruise ships dock at the Port of Latakia, which is around a 10 minute drive away from the city centre.

Public buses run from the port, via the train station and into the downtown area and taxis may also be available.
