Overview Of The Port Of Labrador

About Labrador
Labrador is the northerly region of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada. Red Bay, where cruise ships anchor, is a picturesque, charming fishing village, located on the southern coast.

Red Bay has attracted fishers through the centuries and by the 1540's, ships from the Basque provinces of France and Spain were hunting the right and bowhead whales in the Strait of Belle Isle. The seasonal whaling activities that took place here constituted the first industry of any kind in Canada.

A 16th century Basque whaling ship, believed to be the San Juan was discovered here leading to Red Bay being designated a National Historic Site in 1989 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013.

Discover the stories of 16th century Basque whaling and it's role in Canada's history. Tour the artefact collection and interpretive displays and visit the Right Whale Exhibit at the Selma Barkham Town Hall.

Explore the self-guided interpretation trail on nearby Saddle Island, accessible by boat.

More information about the area can also be found at the Visitor Interpretation Centre.

Other activities include iceberg and whale watching and fishing.

Take a 2 hour guided walking tour through Red Bay visiting local landmarks and historic sites and learn about the history of the local community.

The tallest lighthouse in Atlantic Canada is located at nearby Point Amour. L' Anse Amour Burial Mound, dating back 7500 years is close by.

Local, handmade gifts, clothing and artwork make good take home items along with jams made with local berries.

There are limited dining options here but the cod and chips rate highly, along with other dishes such as seafood soup, halibut and fishcakes. In-season berries are used for tempting desserts such as sundaes and pies.
