About Kristiansund
Kristiansund is a city and municipality on the western coast of Norway, Scandinavia, in the Nordmøre district of Møre og Romsdal county.
Take a city sightseeing tour and learn about the history from the Stone age, the Viking battle at Rastarkalv, and the klipfish era.
Places of interest in Kristiansund include the Arnulf Øverland Art Gallery & Old Town, the Fire Museum, Kristiansund modern church and Kringsjå park.
Don't miss Klippfiskkjerringa, the town`s most famous sculpture, which is located beside Fisketrappa. It is a tribute to the klipfish workers.
Take a guided tour around the four islands of Kristiansund to learn more about the history of the town or visit to the Norwegian Klipfish Museum.
There are many road trips to choose from including the Atlantic Road, the Trollstigen Road, the Eagle Road and the Geiranger fjord.
Further afield is the city of Molde, nicknamed the 'Town of Roses' or see the largest windmill park in Northern Europe at Smøla island.
Grip Island is located 14km out at sea and used to be one of the most important fishing villages on the coast of Western Norway. Today, tourists visit the narrow streets, colourful houses and picturesque stave church which dates back to 1470.
Visit the Marble Caves of Nass, not far from the Atlantic Road. Take a tranquil boat ride across the clear waters, passing through several hidden halls and learn about the history of the mountain.
Other activities include diving, fishing, kayaking and walking. Mount Kvernberget is 10 minutes by bus from the city centre. It is an easy walk with beautiful panoramic views of the town or Mount Freikollen, a little further away, is ideal for more advanced hikers.
Fresh fish and seafood (klipfish/cod/mussels and scallops) naturally feature highly on menus here. However, there are also a wide range of international cuisines such as Spanish, Mexican, Chinese, French and Italian to choose from.
