Overview Of The Port Of Klaksvik

About Klaksvik
Klaksvík is the second largest town of the Faroe Islands, an archipelago and autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark, situated between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. The town is located on Borðoy, which is one of the northernmost islands (the Norðoyar).

Klaksvík is situated around a very well-protected bay and is the main fishing port on the Faroe Islands.

A frequent bus service links the town to Tórshavn, while smaller services operate to Fuglafjørður, Kunoy and Viðareiði. Introduced in 2014, the city bus (Bussleiðin) connects the outlying parts with the city centre. Taxis are also available for hire.

Since 2006, Klaksvik is now linked to the mainland of the Faroe Island via the Leirvík sub sea tunnel.

Christianskirkjan, built in 1963, is the first one in Scandinavia to be built in Old Norse style and is dedicated to the memory of the sailors who lost their lives during World War II.

Föroya Bjór is a Faroese family brewery, which was founded in 1888, guided tours can be booked with the Tourist Information Centre.

Úti í Grøv is a picturesque, peaceful spot, known for inspiring poets and painters. Remains of a house from Viking times can also be found here.

Take a boat trip on the picturesque mail boat, and visit the remote islands Fugloy and Svínoy.

Klaksvik is a good place for buying woollen items, including jumpers, jackets, hats, shawls and gloves, which are all popular in the Faroe Islands. Other souvenirs include ceramics, stamps and jewellery. Service charges are always included in all stated prices, so you are not obliged to tip. Visitors are exempt from the 25% value added tax (VAT) on purchases over DKK 300. Look for the blue and white “Tax Free for Tourists” sign in the shop window and ask for more information.

Most traditional Faroese cuisine involves either lamb or fish. Distinctive Faroese foods include puffins served with potatoes and wild berries, 'skerpikjøt', (dried, raw mutton), Turrur fiskur (dried fish) and 'grind og spik' (whale meat and blubber).
Cruise Terminal
Klaksvik harbour is the safest and best sheltered in the Faroe Islands. The West Quay is most usually used for cruise ships.

Anchorage, not far from the harbour, is also an option.
