About Kemi
Kemi is a town in Finland, northern Europe. Kemi is situated by the Bothnian Bay, at the mouth of river Kemijoki, and it is part of Lapland region.
Kemi is an industrial town, but winter visitors come here for two reasons, the Snow Castle and the Sampo Icebreaker.
The Snow Castle of Kemi is the biggest snow fort in the world. It is rebuilt every winter with a different architecture but usually has a restaurant, chapel and hotel.
The Snow Restaurant features ice tables and seats covered with reindeer fur, as well as ice sculptures. The ecumenical Snow Chapel seats between 50-100 people and the Snow Hotel offers a choice of rooms decorated by local artists using local materials.
The Snow Castle of Kemi also hosts an adventure land for children, a theatre and ice art exhibitions with lights and sound effects.
Sampo, the former icebreaker for the Finnish government, offers a unique cruise experience between December and April, among the vast open arctic sea-scenery.
A model of The Crown of Finland (original was never made for the King of Finland) is kept in the Gemstone gallery. There are also replicas like the Imperial State Crown of Great Britain; the Sceptre of the Czar of Russia; Orbs of Denmark and the Diamond necklace of Marie Antoinette among other things.
Kemi Church is a gothic revival church completed in 1902. Around 12km from Kemi in the neighbouring municipality of Keminmaa, the old medieval church, build between 1519 and 1521, houses the undecomposed body of priest Nicolaus Rungius, who died in 1629.
Rovaniemi, around an 80 minute drive away, is considered the official home town of Santa Claus (the folklore home of Santa is in eastern Lapland) and is home to the Santa Claus Village at the Arctic Circle and Santapark, located 8km north of the centre.
Kemi has a number of shops, supermarkets, sports and clothing shops. Reindeer skin rugs are a popular buy.
Seafood, meat and fish dishes, especially herring and salmon are common sights on menus. Fast food such as pizza and burgers can also be found.
