Overview Of The Port Of Grytviken

About Grytviken
Grytviken is the principal settlement in the British territory of South Georgia in the South Atlantic Ocean.

Grytviken used to be a large whaling station. However, most of the buildings have been removed with only a few structures remaining as a historic site. There is also a small restored Norwegian church here and the museum documents the whaling history of South Georgia and displays information about local flora and fauna.

Grytviken is closely associated with the Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton. After his death in 1922, his widow chose South Georgia as his final resting place and his grave can be found south of Grytviken, alongside other whalers who died on the island.

Hike up to the reservoir, located on the hill above the whaling station for nice scenery and excellent views of the bay.

Shackleton's cross is located at the end of King Edward Point, beyond the British Base. A trail to the cross is fairly easy to follow but be on the lookout for some very territorial fur seals.

There is a small gift shop in the museum that sells local interest books, posters and other souvenirs. The Post Office is open upon request and has a range of postcards, stamps, first day covers and South Georgia coins for sale.
