About Golfito
The port town of Golfito is located in Puntarenas Province on the southern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, Central America, near the border of Panama. The town lies on a narrow strip of land between the eponymous bay and a hill.
Golfito beaches are the main attraction for visitors. Pavones beach is a two hour drive from town, located south of Golfito near the entrance of Golfo Dulce and is a popular surfing area, especially between April and October.
Cacao beach is located across the bay and is accessible by taxi boat or 4x4 during the dry season. Zancudo beach can be found south of Golfito (reachable by bus or boat depending on the tides). Both beaches have bars for refreshments.
Refugio Nacioal Golfito is the protected wildlife area and trails start from the town and lead to numerous landings with scenic views of the ocean and forest. There are no public facilities within the wilderness area.
Remote and relatively untouched, Piedras Blancas National Park is the place to go to see wildlife and tropical rainforest. Access is via the many wilderness lodges along the Golfo Dulce.
Shopping can be done at the duty free centre in the north of the town. Visitors will need to present a passport and also familiarize themselves with any restrictions.
Dining choices in Golfito range from fresh fish and seafood such as tuna, mahi mahi and lobster, BBQ, Chinese and local dishes such as 'casado', a Costa Rican rice plate.
