Overview Of The Port Of Gold Harbour
About Gold Harbour
Gold Harbour is a small bay south-southwest of Cape Charlotte, along the east end of South Georgia, in the southern Atlantic Ocean.
Gold Harbour is perfect for nature and bird lovers alike and has many breeding species including the king and gentoo penguins, light-mantled sooty albatross, white-chinned petrel, blue-eyed shag, kelp gull, Antarctic tern, South Georgia pintail and elephant and fur seals.
There are strict landing requirements here, only smaller vessels may anchor and no more than 100 visitors ashore at any time.
Visitors must stay to the guided walking and viewing areas so as to not disturb the wildlife.
Safety notes: Gold Harbour is exposed to the south and east and may be subject to swell. Strong katabatic winds can descend from the Bertrab Glacier with little warning. Beware of waves caused by ice falls from the Bertrab Glacier when walking near the shore of the lagoon area. Take care near the cliff edges surrounding Gold Head, particularly in strong winds.
