About Bintulu
Bintulu is a coastal town in the Bintulu Division of Sarawak, Malaysia, in south east Asia.
The old town of Bintulu is fairly pedestrian friendly, however there isn't a lot to see here. Enjoy a leisurely stroll down the 120-acre Bintulu Promenade, located near the delta of Kemena River and the Parkcity Everly Hotel.
Pasar Utama & Pasar Tamu Bintulu markets are located side by side and the most frequently visited location in Bintulu, by both locals and tourists. The market is divided into many parts, and sells a range of items such as fruit, belachan (shrimp paste), fish, vegetables, cheap handicrafts and the famous layer cake (kek lapis)
Sample local versions of fast food at Bintulu Pasar Malam market, which is held every day. Choose between apam balik (a sort of crispy crumpet), roti canai (flatbread) or nasi campur (rice with a variety of smaller dishes).
Nearby attractions include Kampung Jepak, which is a traditional fishermen village and Kuan Ying Tong Temple, only Chinese temple in the area. Similajau National Park has a golden beach and very harsh mangrove woods. It is possible to hike deep into the jungle from here.
Golf can be found at Bintulu's Golf Course, whilst fishing is also a popular sport here.
Tanjung Batu Beach features both a rocky and sandy beach side-by-side and is a popular place for locals to hang out.
Shopping opportunities can be found at the Parkcity Mall and City Point on Keppel Road. Souvenirs include 'Belachan' (Shrimp Paste), Terendak (Melanauh Headgear) and various products made from the extract of the Sagu tree.
Thai, Chinese, Malay, Indian and Indonesian options can all be found in Bintulu. Popular local dishes include sea cucumber soup, deep fried fish with various sauces, 'Umai', a Sarawak local food consisting of sliced raw fish, onion, chillies, salt and lime juice, and 'Nasi Ayam' (fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk and "pandan" leaf).
