Amber Cove

Amber Cove is located on the Bay of Maimon near Puerto Plata, on the Dominican Republic's North Coast.

The Malecon is a 3 mile long boardwalk in Puerto Plata, with great views of the sea, dotted with bars and restaurants.

Local attractions include the Brugal Rum factory, San Felipe Fortress and San Felipe Cathedral.

Take the cable car to the top of the flat-topped Pico Isabel de Torres, where on clear days, spectacular views of the city and coastline can be seen. At the top is a botanical gardens, and a large statue of Christ the Redeemer.

Enjoy a trip to nearby Paradise Island, where you can snorkel and explore the coral reef which surrounds it, or swim and relax on unspoilt beaches.

Explore the historical town of La Isabela where you also visit the museum or go on a jeep safari.

For families and nature lovers, Ocean World Adventure Park, Fun City Action Park and zip lining at Country World Adventure Park are possible options.

The beach towns of Sosua and Cabarete, famous for its windsurfing and kiteboarding, are around 30 minutes drive away.

Activities here include deep sea fishing, horse riding, golf and diving. Adventure seekers may also enjoy Rio Damajagua, home of 27 waterfalls.

Cigars, local handicrafts, artwork and amber jewellery make good gifts, along with Mamajuana, a local drink made from rum, red wine and honey, soaked in a bottle with tree bark and herbs.

Fish and seafood (shrimp, marlin, mahi-mahi and lobster) options can be found in most restaurants, along with international favourites such as Italian, Mexican and American. Rice, red beans and meat (beef, chicken, pork, or fish), with a side salad is a traditional local dish.

Amber Cove Cruise Centre opened in 2015.

The port has two berths, designed to accommodate up to 10,000 passengers.

Facilities include refreshments, local vendors, car hire and taxi services.
