About Aeroskobing
Aeroskobing (Ærøskøbing) is a town located on the island of Ærø, Denmark in northern Europe.
Walk through the narrow cobblestone streets, lined with 17th and 18th century houses some beautifully preserved and restored to retain the character of the Middle Ages.
As the island is only reachable by ferry, there are few cars here, making it a fairly peaceful place to explore.
Aeroskobing Church can be found in the market square, nearby are two old town pumps that supplied the town with water right up until the 1950's.
The Prior's House is one of the town's oldest buildings, dating back to 1690.
The local museum houses collections from the town, seafaring and farming communities, including a special costume collection. The maritime collection is from 17th and 18th century when the sea had a huge influence over the life of the town.
The old harbour has been enlarged by a new marina. The beach at Vesterstrand is a few minutes' walk from the town and the harbour.
The Cook House dates back to 1810 and was used as the harbour cooking facility as it was forbidden to cook over an open fire on ships moored in the harbour. Having been restored in 2001, it again serves its original purpose as a place where yachtsmen can prepare food.
The town windmill, of Dutch origin, dates back to 1848 and has become a landmark of the town.
Flaskeskibssamlingen or the 'Ships in a Bottle' Museum is where you can see 1700 exhibits of the lifetime work of Bottle Peter.
Take a beer tasting tour at Rise Bryggeri, then enjoy lunch at the adjourning restaurant with your favourite tipple!
Bregninge was originally a roman Romanesque church from the 1200s with monumental Gothic arches built in the late 1400s. The impressive steeple of the tower is covered with oak shingles and the fresco dates from around 1510.
Hire a bike and explore round the island.
Popular Danish souvenirs include ceramics, arts and craft items, 'flødeboller' (chocolate covered marshmallow cream balls on a cookie base) and quirky kitchen and homeware goods.
Fish, seafood and meat are prominent parts of any Danish dish with haddock, lobster, eel, herring, plaice, salmon and shrimp being very popular along with pork, beef and turkey.
Traditional dishes include 'gammeldags kylling' (old fashioned pan-cooked chicken, served with cucumber salad, rhubarb compote, potatoes and brown sauce), 'frikadeller' (pork/veal meatballs) and 'hakkebøf' (ground beef steak with soft caramelized onions and brown sauce).
