About Vik
Vik is a municipality in the county of Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. It is located in the traditional district of Sogn and the administrative centre of Vik is the village of Vikøyri.
Take a guided cultural walk and discover the history of the area, see two medieval churches - Hopperstad Stave Church and Hove Stone Church, both dating back to the 1100's.
For a variety of snow activities, the Vik Ski Centre is only 15 minutes away.
Vikøyri is a historical shore dweller site which has characteristic tiny wooden houses. The development of the shore dweller site started in the first half of the 17th century. You will also find a Tine cheese factory, which is the only one in the world that produces gammelost cheese.
Stølsheimen Nature Preserve has lakes, rivers & waterfalls, Vikafjellet is home to wild reindeer herds. The Nærøyfjorden World Heritage Park stretches over parts of the mountain area between Vik and the Nærøyfjord, including the glacier Fresvikbreen and the waterfall Huldafossen. Guided hikes in the Heritage Park can be arranged.
Bird watching is popular in the area, local spots include Eurasian Golden Plover, Buzzards and Eurasian Oystercatchers.
The Kristianhus Boat and Engine museum is located by the fjord in the centre of Vikøyri, in the same building as the tourist office.
