Thursday Island

Thursday Island (aka TI or Waiben) is the administrative and commercial centre of the Torres Strait Islands, which lie 39km north of Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, Australia. It is also the most developed of the Torres Strait Island group.

For panoramic views over the town and neighbouring islands, hike up to Green Fort and Museum.

Horn Island Jetty is an ideal place for a spot of fishing, with lots of different species around.

Have a drink in Australia’s most northern pub – the Royal Hotel.

There is an Olympic sized swimming pool and tennis courts available for visitors to use.

Walking around Thursday Island is easy but there are taxis available should you need them.

Gab Titui Cultural Centre houses a modern gallery displaying cultural history of the Torres Strait.

On the neighbouring Horn Island, the Heritage Museum and Art Gallery is a wealth of information on the region’s WWII history.

The waters surrounding Thursday Island are home to an abundance of marine life including turtles, dugongs, crocodiles, sharks and many fish varieties.

Traditional handicrafts and gifts are sold here but tend to be a little pricey.

Fresh fish and seafood such as crab and mussels as well as chicken, beef and lamb dishes are served in local restaurants and cafes.

Cruise ships anchor and tender passengers ashore.
