About Port Mahon
Mahon (Port Mahon), is the capital of Minorca, one of the Balearic Islands in Spain, located in the western Mediterranean Sea.
There are several small boutiques near the harbour area. Leather and jewellery are popular buys. The Plaza de Espana has market stalls lining the arcades of the former Carmelite Friary.
Near the pier is the Xoriguer Gin Distillery where visitors can tour, sample and purchase the local liquor.
S'Albufera des Grau Nature Park, located in the north eastern part of the island, includes a 2km
long, oval shaped lagoon - Albufera des Grau, which is Minorca's largest wetland. It is located next to the village of Grau and its beach.
Museums include the Sóller Marine Museum and the Natural Science Museum and Botanical Garden.
Throughout the island there are many megalithic stone monuments and historical sites on the island. The prehistoric settlement of Torre LLafuda, located in the vicinity of Ciutadella features round dwellings and a number of caves.
The settlement of Talatí de Dalt is the most emblematic settlement in Minorcan prehistory, thanks to its unique taula and wide variety of monuments.
The medieval castle Santa Àgueda is located in Ferreries. It is situated 264m high and dominates a good part of the north-eastern coast of the island.
Beaches and coves are found all over the island, the popular ones being at Cala Blanca, Cala Santamaria, Cala en Brut, Cala en Forcat and Cala en Blanes.
A local speciality is 'caldereta de llagosta' (lobster stew), along with an array of prawn, mussels, squid, mullet, sole and seabass dishes.
