Marseilles

Marseille, the gateway to Provence, is located on the south east coast of France.

The Vieux Port is the centre of tourist Marseille and is surrounded by small streets lined with seafood restaurants, cafes and shops.

North of the Vieux Port is Le Panier, the oldest part of the city and a popular haunt for tourists.

The Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde, the Basilique St Victor and the Cathedrale de la Major are three churches of interest to visitors.

Museums include the Musee des Civilisations de l'Europe et la Mediterranee, Musee d'Archeologie Mediterraneenne and Musee Cantini.

Plage des Catalans is the nearest sandy beach to the port, it is around 10 minutes walk away.

Bouillabaisse (fish stew) is the local dish.

There are two main areas where cruise ships dock.

Taxis and shuttle buses are available and the centre of Marseille is about 8km away.

There are a few shops at the port which sell souvenirs.
