About Marmaris
Marmaris is a port town and tourist resort on the Mediterranean coast, located in southwest Turkey, along the shoreline of the Turkish Riviera.
Marmaris is an attractive natural harbour backed by mountains, with a palm lined promenade leading to the busy marina with restaurants, bars, a shopping complex and swimming pool.
The new Marmaris city square boasts over 5,000 plants, bordered seating areas, a beautiful waterfall and charming bridge leading to the bathroom facilities, set above a small pool with lovely fountains. If you are there at night, don't miss the magical dancing fountains and light show set to music.
There are two museums in Marmaris, the Marmaris Castle & Museum is located in central Marmaris at the harbour and the Private Museum of Ethnography and Archaeology (Marmaris Halici Ahmet Urkay Museum) can be found 10km away.
Cleopatra's Island, boat trips to neighbouring towns Turunc and Icmeler, the ruins at Knidos and a trip to Rhodes (high season) are popular excursions.
The Dalyan River offers boat trips and nice beaches, some are home to loggerhead turtles.
Handicrafts such as carpets, painted ceramics and jewellery are all good buys.
Meze, 'kuzu güveç' (lamb casserole), 'karnıyarık' (fried eggplants with a minced meat) and 'lahmacun' (pizza like dish) are all traditional Turkish dishes.
