Overview Of The Port Of Kodiak

About Kodiak
Kodiak is one of 7 communities and the main city on Kodiak Island, Kodiak Island Borough, in the U.S. state of Alaska.

Originally inhabited by Alutiiq natives for over 7000 years, the city was settled in the 18th century by the subjects of the Russian crown and became the capital of Russian Alaska.

Kodiak's cultural traditions and history can be seen at Alutiiq Museum and Archaeological Repository, Baranov Museum and Kodiak Military History Museums.

Kodiak is famous for it's huge Kodiak brown bears and trips can be arranged to spot these amazing animals.

Sample some locally made beer at the Kodiak Island Brewing Company.

Visit the Kodiak Laboratory Aquarium and Touch Tank or go fishing at Sargent Creek.

Tourists can also visit by floatplane, remote areas and wilderness lodges on the various islands of the Kodiak Archipelago for bear viewing, hunting and hiking.

You will find many unique Alaskan, locally made, Native and Russian-made souvenirs, arts and crafts in local shops as well as original artworks in the many galleries, clothing and sporting goods. During high season, the occasional Bear Town Market is the place to head for locally hand-made items (the Visitor Centre can advise you of dates for this market).

Salmon, halibut, cod and king crab are local specialities.
Cruise Terminal
Cruise ships dock at Kodiak’s City Dock II, which is around 2½ km from the centre of town. Shuttle buses may be available via your cruiseline.

Car hire and bike rental are available and are a good way of exploring the local area.
