King Island

Grassy is a township on King Island, Tasmania, Australia.

Sea Rocks Nature Reserve in the south west is home to the ancient Calcified Forest and trails follow the length of the reserve.

Full and half day guided tours are available. Learn about King Island’s tragic maritime past. There are many shipwrecks dotted along the coasts.

Other places of interest include King Island Dairies and Cheese factory, Reid Rocks, which is a breeding colony for the Australian fur seal and Cape Wickham Lighthouse, the tallest lighthouse in the southern hemisphere (48m high).

There are many beautiful beaches, activities available include kite surfing, diving, surfing and fishing. Golf, horse riding, sailing and cycling are also popular.

Kelp Craft in Grassy offers unique souvenirs of kelp sculpted and sewn into items such as hats and figurines (limited opening hours, please check in advance).

Try some homemade pies and pasties at the local corner store or enjoy a picnic or BBQ at Blackwood Street where there are free electric BBQ’s, toilets and playground nearby.

Local restaurants serve fresh, local produce and fish, as well as steaks, lamb and chicken dishes.

Smaller ships may be able to dock at Grassy but most ships are required to anchor and tender passengers ashore.
