Homer

Homer is on the shore of Kachemak Bay on the southwest side of the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska in the United States of America. Its most distinguishing feature is the Homer Spit, a narrow 4.5 mile long gravel bar that extends into the bay, on which is located the Homer Harbour.

The Homer Spit is open all year round, however shops at the end of the spit generally close in mid September and re-opens in April. It takes around an hour to walk from one end of the spit to the other. The spit can also be viewed from the beach but check tide times as it isn't always possible to access it during high tide.

There may be an opportunity to experience the varied wildlife here, especially the bald headed eagles, moose, black bears, puffins, whales and otters.

The Pratt Museum is where you can learn about the history of the bay and surrounding area.

Take a water taxi across the bay to Kachemak Bay State Park, the first and largest park in the state.

Go hiking or halibut fishing or just wander round and soak up the local history, stopping off at the local pub which dates back to the late 1800's. There is a walking trail in Homer’s downtown business district.

Many shops offer local Alaskan handmade items including jewellery, leather, handmade clothing, art, toys and gifts. Most of the shops are located in the main part of town or on the Spit, and many are family-owned.

Stop by the local brewery, meadery and winery to taste their unique products. They often feature art exhibits and gift items.

Salmon, King Crab, halibut and reindeer are popular dishes in the region.

Cruise ships dock at the Homer Deep Water Dock, around 5km from downtown Homer.

Shuttles are generally provided into town and car hire is available here too.
