Funchal

Funchal is the capital city of Madeira, part of the Portuguese archipelago situated in the Atlantic Ocean.

Monte is a village around 600-800m above sea level, the journey to it is by cable car and the trip takes you up and over the old town of Funchal and the Ribeira de Joao Gomes valley. From Monte, there are some gorgeous views over the south coast of Madeira.

Riding the wicker toboggans back down to Funchal is very popular. The two-person wicker sledges are "driven" down the streets of the mountain by two men in traditional white outfits. The rubber soles of their boots act as breaks, the sledges achieve speeds of nearly 20 miles per hour as they twist along the pavement from the top to the bottom.

Another attraction is Tea at Reid's Palace Hotel, one of the great historic hotels of the world. Situated on 10 acres of lush cliffside, the hotel offers a very British high tea in the afternoons.

If the cruise schedule allows, take the ferry to Porto Santos. As Madeira has no beaches Porto Santo has golden sands and warm water, it's an option for a nice day trip.

Set sail around the island on Gallion Santa Maria, a contemporary reproduction of Columbus' famous ship, complete with crew.

Souvenirs to look out for include embroidery, especially tea towels, bed sheets and blouses, Madeira dessert wine and folk hats.

Popular dishes on the island include fish stew, shrimp in garlic sauce and swordfish with banana and peppercorn steak.

The cruise port is near the centre of the city, but it still a good 20 minute, slight uphill walk to town. Most cruise lines operate shuttles and taxis are available at the dock. There are a few tourist type huts for last minute
souvenirs.
