East London

East London is a city on the south-east coast of South Africa.

Places of interest to visit include City Hall, dating back to 1897, East London Museum, which features the world's only egg from the extinct Dodo bird, the German Settlers Memorial and Gately House, a national monument and home of East London's first Mayor.

The Anne Bryant Art Gallery has a varied and valuable art collection, and is a good example of late Victorian architecture.

The Calgary Transport Museum is located around 13km from East London and features collections of waggons and a Gypsy caravan.

Queens Park Zoo and Botanical Gardens and the East London Aquarium are good options for families.

Mpongo Park Game Private Reserve offers the chance to experience a game drive, with the option of either self drive or guided tour.

Latimer's Landing is a waterfront development on the Buffalo River with restaurants and pubs. Boat trips and pleasure cruises can be arranged.

Lock Street Gaol is a former prison, dating back to 1880. It now houses a variety of shops. Shopping can also be found at Hemingways Mall, which has a good selection of shops and restaurants.

Golf is a favourite pastime here, popular courses include West Bank Golf Club, Alexander Golf Club, Fish River Sun and East London Golf Club.

Other sporting activities available include mountain biking, skydiving, horse riding, surfing, scuba diving, fishing and windsurfing.

Local dishes include 'bobotie' (meatloaf with raisins and baked egg on top) and 'bunny chow' (curry stuffed into a hollowed-out loaf of bread). Seafood, Italian, Chinese, Thai and American options are also available.

Ships dock at Port of East London, which is a short drive from the centre of town.
