Durban

Durban is the largest city in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal, located on the east coast of the country.

uShaka Marine World features shark tanks and dolphin shows.

The magnificent Juma Masjid Mosque, on Grey Street, is the largest mosque in the Southern hemisphere, and dominates Durban's central Indian district.

Off Grey Street is the Madressa Arcade bazaar and nearby is the Victoria Street Market offering items such as incense, henna tattoos and spices.

Durban Botanical Gardens features rare plants, orchids, trees and birds. It is Durban’s oldest public institution.

Umhlanga Rocks is an upmarket coastal village 15km from Durban. It has a blue flag beach with a variety of watersports available. Nearby places of interest include Gateway Shopping and Entertainment complex, Mount Edgecombe golf course, Hawaan Forest, a beautiful, unspoilt, indigenous woodland area which is home to a large number of animals and birds and Umgeni River Bird Park.

The Valley of 1000 Hills, around 30 minutes drive from Durban has unspoilt nature, wildlife and magnificent scenery. The area is named after the thousands of hills which tumble down to the mighty Umgeni River.

Shopping opportunities range from shopping malls and markets to craft and art centres and small boutiques.

Addington, North Beach and Battery Beach are popular city beaches and very family-friendly.

Durban has one of the largest Indian populations outside of India itself. Visitors can sample hot curry dishes as well the famous Durban dish – the 'Bunnychow', a quarter loaf of bread hollowed out and filled with a curry of your choice. International cuisine including Italian, Chinese and seafood are also available.

Cruise ships dock at the Passenger Terminal. There are stands of handicrafts and gifts available including basket and beadwork.

Taxis are available, the city centre is around 10 minutes walk away but walking is not usually recommended.
