About Cassis
Cassis is a commune situated east of Marseille in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southern France.
The pace is slow in Cassis and many visitors just enjoy a relaxing drink, taking in the spectacular scenery or strolling around the town, which is dotted with sidewalk cafes, pizzerias, creperies and ice cream vendors.
Place Baragnon is the town square, which next to City Hall, and the location of weekly open-air markets (usually Wednesdays and Fridays). All sorts of items can be found from meats fish and vegetables to fruit, flowers and clothing.
Musée du Cassis is housed in an 18th century rectory in Place Baragnon. The museum’s collection includes archaeological artefacts discovered from the Celto-Ligurian, Etruscan and Roman periods and cultural exhibits representing local Cassidain and Provençal folklore and traditions. Cassis wine makers still produce popular varieties and vineyards can be found on the terraced hillsides in the shelter of Cap Canaille, which is the highest sea cliff in France and one of the highest in Europe.
Visit the Calanques National Park, established in 2012. There are many activities to do here such as hiking, walking, rock climbing and caving as well as yachting, scuba diving, fishing and tourist boat trips to the Calanques.
Casino Barrière is open daily from 10am to dawn. There are 270 slot machines and gaming tables offering Roulette, Black Jack, Stud Poker and Texas Hold'em poker.
Relax on La plage de la Grande Mer, the main beach of Cassis. It is located at the foot of Castle Hill.
