Argostoli

Argostoli is a town and a former municipality on the island of Kefalonia, one of the Ionian Islands of Greece.

Visit Melissani and Drogarati Caves near Sami and St George's Castle, a 1,600 year old castle located around 22 miles north of Argostoli.

Argostoli itself has an attractive cobbled promenade fringed with palm trees along the harbour. At the end there is a vegetable market of local produce and a selection of cafes and small tavernas.

The main square is lined with cafes, bars and restaurants and a choice of shops selling jewellery, local crafts and thyme honey.

Kabanas Square is home to the bell tower, which can be climbed for a good view of Argostoli from the top.

There is a beach in Argostoli near the small Marina, at the start of the Fanari Road leading to Lassi.

Local dishes include Kefalonian pies (home made crust and filling of rice, meat, leek and spinach, vegetables, cod and octopus), Bourbourelia (soup) and Galaktompoureko (home made crust and custard filling). Mantoles is the famous sweet snack of the Ionian Islands, made with almonds and sugar.

Ships dock at the pier near the centre of town. It's around a 15 minute walk from here. Occasionally, ships may have to anchor and tender passengers into the Old Harbour.
