Alesund

Ålesund is a town and municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It is part of the traditional district of Sunnmøre, and the centre of the Ålesund Region.

For the best view of the fjords and mountains, either walk up 400 steps or take a taxi to the top of Fjellstua, here you will find a restaurant serving both light snacks and gourmet food. There are also walkways allowing fantastic views all around.

Borgund Church is situated in Borgundkaupangen, and is partially built on the remains of the old St Peter's Church from the 12th century.

Ålesund Church was originally constructed in 1854, but it was damaged in a fire in 1904. The current church was built between 1906-1909. It contains frescoes and beautiful stained glass windows and the organ is one of the largest in Norway.

The Art Nouveau Centre charts the town's architectural history.

Atlanterhavsparken is one of the largest saltwater aquariums in northern Europe and is located a few minutes drive from the centre of Ålesund.

Further afield visitors can visit the Geirangerfjord, which is a World Heritage site and a highly recommend fjord experience.

Ålesund has a large assortment of shops from big chain stores to small specialist outlets, popular buys include knitted sweaters and jackets, glass, ceramics, jewellery and locally produced handicrafts.

Local dishes include Fenalår (cured and seasoned sheep's meat), Pinnekjøtt (salted and dried lamb's ribs), Multekrem (cloudberries and whipped cream dessert) and Tørrfisk (stockfish).

The cruise terminal is located in the very centre of Ålesund. Most attractions are within a 20 minute walk away.

There is a bus terminal in town.
