About Eleuthera
Eleuthera is an island in The Bahamas, lying 50 miles (80 km) east of Nassau in the Atlantic Ocean. It is long and thin - 110 miles long and in places little more than 1 mile wide.
Taxis are widely available, agree a price before setting off. There is no public transport on the island or official car hire companies although locals will often rent you a car!
Places of interest include Hatchet Bay Caves, one of the largest system of caves in the Caribbean, Glass Window Bridge, Preachers Cave, Queens Bath and Leon Levy Natural Plant Preserve.
Spanish Wells (St George's Cay) is a 1.5 mile long island situated off the northern tip of Eleuthera. Rent a golf cart next to the ferry and amble down the narrow streets, see pristine beaches and buy hand-made items made by locals, such as broad-brimmed hats and quilts.
There are many lovely beaches to choose from including Lighthouse, Ten Bay, Gauldings Cay and Rainbow Bay.
Activities available include fishing, diving, snorkelling and scuba diving.
Local restaurants serve a mix of local dishes, fresh fish and seafood (especially conch, rock lobster and land crabs) and other options such as pizzas, wraps and salads. Stew Fish is a local speciality. Coconut is found in most desserts.
