Overview Of The Port Of Zihuatanejo

About Zihuatanejo
Zihuatanejo is the fourth largest city in the Mexican state of Guerrero in south west Mexico. It is on the Pacific Coast, about 240km northwest of Acapulco.

Zihuatanejo has plenty of shopping opportunities, the nearby marketplace (Mercado de los Artisans)has hundreds of stalls selling blankets, ornate silver items, local pottery, hand woven hammocks and rugs.

El Faro lighthouse, located at the end of Las Gatas beach, is about a 15 minute walk down a flagstone path from the Las Gatas Beach Club. The view is spectacular and includes the small islands in front of Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo Bay.

Museo Arqueologico de la Costa Grande is located at the end of the malecon (beachfront street) in Zihuatanejo. The museum houses artifacts from as early as 3000B.C. (Closed Sundays).

The main swimming beach of Zihuatanejo (Playa La Ropa) has gentle surf and a family atmosphere. The beach is accessible via a footpath (a 30 minute walk from Zihua or 5 minute taxi ride.

Playa Las Gatas is accessible by water taxi from the main dock and is a good snorkelling spot.

Playa el Palmar is the main beach in Ixtapa.

Troncones is around 16 miles north of Zihua. It is known as one of the best surfing spots in all of Mexico and is also a site of sea turtle nests. The mountains above the beaches provide a popular hike up to La Majahua caverns and zipline platforms, which take you above the jungle on rope harnesses.

The seaside village of Barra de Petosi, around 15 miles from Zihua, is home to the wildlife sanctuary lagoon. Horse riding is also available here.

Local dishes include fish tacos, fresh guacamole, 'pozole' (pork and vegetable broth), 'barbacoa' (slow cooked meat), fresh oysters, tuna and octopus.
Cruise Terminal
Cruise ships anchor in Zihuatanejo Bay and tender passengers to the small dock in Zihua. Shops are an easy 3 minute walk away. Ixtapa is approximately 3 miles away by bus, taxi or shore excursion.

Buses have the destination listed on the front so you can easily tell which one to board. There are water taxis to the small snorkelling beaches of Las Gatas and La Ropa.
