Overview Of The Port Of Victoria (Mahe Island)

About Victoria (Mahe Island)
Mahé is the largest island of the Seychelles, in the Indian Ocean. The capital city is Victoria.

Take a moderate hike starting in the Morne Seychellois National Park, through forests to the top of the mountain of Morne Blanc. The trail leads to a platform perched atop the sheer cliff with spectacular panoramic views. Many of the Seychelles’ endemic birds, such as the Seychelles bulbul, the swiftlet and the Seychelles sunbird make their home here.

There are other trails available to explore, with the option of a tour guide.

The Mission Lodge offers spectacular sea and mountain views looking southward across Mahé from the shaded gazebo viewpoint. The colonial ruins of Venn’s Town, which was once a farm and boarding school for liberated slave children in the 1800s, are still visible on the way to the gazebo.

Located in Mont Fleuri, on the outskirts of Victoria, the Botanical Garden is one of Seychelles’ oldest National Monuments, dating back more than a century. It houses a wide collection of mature, exotic and endemic plants within 5 acres of landscaped tropical gardens. Attractions include palms, spice and fruit trees, many of which can only be seen in this garden, an orchid house, a population of giant tortoises from Aldabra and fruit bat colonies, roosting in the taller trees overhead.

The Clock Tower is an elegant replica of the clock that was first erected in London in 1897 at the junction of Victoria Street and Vauxhall Bridge Road, near Victoria Station. It is situated in the middle of an intersection in the centre of town and acts as a roundabout.

The Natural History Museum features many displays of the natural wildlife of the Seychelles.

The morning open air market is where locals buy and bargain for fresh fish, fruits and vegetables. Coconuts and coconut products are abundant and inexpensive in Victoria and coral jewellery, basket work and spices also make popular gifts.

Kenwyn House is one of the oldest and most noble examples of French colonial architecture on Mahé. There is also an art gallery with a comprehensive range of local Seychellois artworks, beautiful tropical gardens and a wide range of crafted South African diamonds and other precious gems on display.

Mahé boasts more beaches than any of the other islands in the Seychelles. Popular stretches include Anse à la Mouche, where the water is very calm and perfect for swimming, Anse Soliel and Anse Major, in the north-west, accessible only by foot or fishing boat.

Local dishes include battered fried parrot fish, grilled fish, tuna steaks, octopus, chicken curry, rice and salads.
