About Unalaska
Unalaska is a city in the Aleutians West Census Area of the Unorganised Borough of the U.S. state of Alaska. Unalaska is located on Unalaska Island.
Almost all of the community's port facilities are on Amaknak Island, better known as Dutch Harbor. Dutch Harbor lies within the city limits of Unalaska and is connected to Unalaska by a bridge.
At the Museum of the Aleutians, many of the finds of recent archaeological work is on display, along with exhibits and information about native history, Captain Cook's 3rd voyage and local artworks.
Unalaska’s most prominent landmark, the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Ascension of Christ, was completed in 1896 and is the oldest cruciform-style cathedral in North America. Overlooking the bay, the church with its onion domes is a favourite for photographers. Inside there are more than 600 Russian Orthodox icons, books and relics.
The port of Unalaska/Dutch Harbor is the main port for the Bering Sea king crab fishery. The Dutch Harbor crabbing fleet is featured in the television show 'Deadliest Catch', a documentary style show on the Discovery Channel. Dutch Harbor's facilities and local pub are featured prominently in numerous episodes.
Aleutian World War II National Historic Area, Visitor Centre is located on the apron of the Dutch Harbor airport. This site is the remains of one of four WWII era forts constructed to defend Dutch Harbor against a potential Japanese attack. Mount Ballyhoo was occupied for 15 months by the Japanese during World War II. On top of the small mountain are some concrete ruins, where American soldiers hid.
Visitors also come to Unalaska to enjoy the many outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, sport fishing, kayaking and bird/wildlife watching.
Shops sell good quality crafts, which reflect it's ties with the Russian Far East.
Fast food, international favourites such as Mexican, Chinese and Italian as well as fresh fish and seafood (crab legs, shrimp, halibut and salmon) can all be found on menus here.
