Overview Of The Port Of Townsville

About Townsville
Townsville is a city on the north-eastern coast of Queensland, Australia. It is adjacent to the central section of the Great Barrier Reef, in the dry tropics region of Queensland.

The Strand has a view of the Port of Townsville and Magnetic Island. Here you will also find a jetty, a recreational park, restaurants, cafes and pools.

Castle Hill is a heritage-listed granite monolith in the heart of Townsville. It stands some 286m above sea level. There are a number of vantage points from which to view the city below and across Cleveland Bay to nearby Magnetic Island.

Paluma Range is a rainforest located around 60 minutes drive north of Townsville. Paluma village is located on the mountain-top, offering tea and craft rooms. Along the Paluma Range highway is Little Crystal Creek and Big Crystal Creek, both of which are ideal for swimming and bushwalking.

Paluma and Crystal Creek is an eco-tourism paradise with a wide array of wildlife and birdlife and Jourama Falls is also located here.

The Museum of Tropical Queensland is a museum of natural history, archaeology and history located in the same complex as the Reef HQ Aquarium.

Other places of interest include Townsville Palmetum, Billabong Sanctuary, Queens Gardens, Mount Stuart, bird-watching at Townsville Town Common Conservation Park, the Botanic Gardens and the Maritime Museum of Townsville.

There are some lovely beaches here including The Strand and Pallarenda in Townsville, Horseshow Bay and Alma Bay on Magnetic Island and Saunders Beach in Thuringowa. Some have stinger nets (no swimming when nets are closed) and some do not have lifeguards. Along the coastal regions, only swim in the swimming enclosures and always observe warning signs.

Sporting opportunities include golf, fishing, horse riding, white water rafting and bush walking.

There are a number of shopping malls and plazas in Townsville including Flinders Street Mall in the city’s shopping hub (on Sundays Cotters Market takes over the open spaces here).

Stockland Plaza (Corner of Nathan Street and Ross River Road, Aitkenvale), is one of the city’s largest shopping centre with 135 speciality stores and 7 major retailers.

Willows Weekend Markets (every Sunday from 8.30am-12.30pm) have over 120 stallholders offering fresh produce, arts and crafts and homemade sweets.

Townsville a wide range of cuisines from Greek, Italian and Asian to French, traditional Australian, steaks and fresh fish and seafood.
Cruise Terminal
Many cruise ships can dock at the cruise terminal at Berth 10 in Townsville, opened in late 2013. However, larger ships may not currently dock here due to safety issues and will need to anchor off-shore.

The terminal has toilets and maps/tourist information inside.

The centre of town is around 3km away, taxis and public transport are both available at the pier.
