Overview Of The Port Of Toulon
About Toulon
Toulon is a city in southern France on the Mediterranean coast. Toulon is located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur region and is the capital of the Var department in the former province of Provence.
The Place de la Liberte is the centre of activity and is bordered by shops, cafes and restaurants. Place Puget features the three dolphins fountain as it’s centrepiece, which dates back to 1780.
There are many churches in the area including Sainte-Marie de la Seds Cathedral, which is over 900 years old.
Fort Sainte-Louis was built in 1696 and occupies a strategic position at the entrance to the Bay.
Toulon Opera House is the largest outside of Paris.
Museums here include the Art, Naval, Folk and National History museums.
The coastal footpath stretches from the Tour Royale tower to Méjean cove and is several miles long.
Tour Royale fort was built in the 16th century. A coastal path from the fort connects it to the beaches of Mourillon.
Originally a fishermen’s village, the Mourillon quarter still boasts its original, picturesque architecture. Its daily market, little boutiques, numerous restaurants and seaside location make it Toulon’s most coveted quarter.
Accessible on foot, car, or cable car, Mont Faron is 584m high and overlooks the Bay of Toulon on one side and inland Var area on the other.
Fish is very popular in the area and most commonly featured on menus are rouget and loup. Other local dishes include 'pissaladière' (type of pizza), Daube provençale stew and 'escabeche' (sardine dish).
