Overview Of The Port Of Santarem

About Santarem
Santarém is a city in the state of Pará in Brazil, South America.

Most visitors take a boat trip to see the "Wedding of the Waters". The Rio Tapajos is clean and clear whilst the Rio Amazonas is muddy. There is a clean line that separates the two rivers even though they are flowing as one.

Treks to explore the nearby rainforest are also available but is muddy and wet and you may not see much wildlife.

There are a couple of museums in Santarem, the Museu de Santarem (or Centro Cultural Joao Fona) has a collection of historical art from area. The Museu Dica Frazao has an amazing collection of clothes and fabrics made from natural fibres collected from local grasses, shrubs and trees.

The cathedral in Santarem was the first structure built in Santarem, originally built in 1661, then replaced in 1761.

The main market, Mercado Modelo is located across from the waterfront in downtown. There are lots of stores, boutiques and shops selling items such as leather goods, jewellery, beadwork, wood carvings, masks and hand-weaved items.

Alter do Chão is a village 33km west of Santerem. From the village it's a short canoe ride across a narrow channel to the beach. (Note that from April to July, when the water is high, the beach shrinks considerably).

Trips into the Amazon jungle can be taken from here.

Floresta Nacional do Tapajos is a beautiful forest where you can go hiking and canoeing.

Local favourite dishes include 'maniçoba' (pork stew) and 'vatapá' (shrimp). There are also regional ice creams made from acai, tapioca, as well as many flavours from the Amazon.
