Overview Of The Port Of Santa Cruz

About Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz is the capital of the island of Tenerife, one of the Spanish Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean.

At the heart of the city lies Plaza de Espana. From here you can explore Santa Cruz's Old Quarter and attractions including the Archaeological Museum, the Fine Arts Museum and the 16th Century Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion (the city's oldest church built in 1502).

The Museo Militar de Almeyda (Military Museum) contains the canon, which shot off Admiral Lord Nelson's arm when his fleet attacked the city in 1793.

San Cristobal de la Laguna, Tenerife's original capital, lies only 5 miles from Santa Cruz. Here you'll find Tenerife's oldest church, cathedral and university and in the surrounding area there are traditional Canarian restaurants, sleepy coastal villages and quiet beaches.

Nature lovers may enjoy the lush Orotava Valley to the south of Santa Cruz. It offers spectacular scenery and also contains the Botanical Gardens, which date from 1788.

Popular day excursions include Mount Teide, Tenerife's highest point and Las Canadas National Park, famed for its spectacular volcanic rock formations.

Loro Parque, is a wildlife themed park in the foothills of El Teide.

For golf, head to Real Club de Golf, near Tenerife's Los Rodeos Airport about 9 miles from Santa Cruz, check in advance when non members can play.

Playa de las Teresitas beach is around 8km from Santa Cruz.

A good buy is stylish and affordable silver items from the numerous jewellery stores in Santa Cruz.

Local dishes such as 'ranch Canaria' (meat and vegetable soup), 'cazuela Canaria' (fish stew) or 'papas arrugadas' (small potatoes cooked in their jackets with a hot Mojo dipping sauce) can be sampled on the island.

Cruise ships dock in Santa Cruz. Note: if your ship parks at the bottom of its U-shaped harbour, it's a 15 minute walk to the centre of town. Some cruise lines provide a shuttle bus (sometimes free) so it's best to check.

Outside the port gates is a broad and beautiful promenade running right along the seafront with shops, cafes, restaurants and nightclubs.

The bus station lies on Avenida Tres de Mayo, about a mile along the promenade (left from port gates).

Taxis are available from the port gates.
