Overview Of The Port Of Santa Cruz De La Palma

About Santa Cruz De La Palma
Santa Cruz is the capital of La Palma, a Canary island in the Atlantic Ocean.

This small island offers vastly different scenery, from mountains, volcanos, forests and beaches to tiny villages and stunning views.

O'Daly Street has tempting antique and craft shops, with easy access to the main sights. O'Daly runs parallel to the Avenida Maritima, Santa Cruz's waterfront promenade.

Plaza de Espana, a palm tree-filled courtyard just off O'Daly Street, is home to an artisans' market selling high-quality lacework, embroidery and leatherwork.

Places of historical interest include the Iglesia de El Salvador church, Italian Renaissance-style Ayuntamiento, the Convento de San Francisco and 17th Century Castillo de Santa Catarina fortress, which lies on Avenida Maritima overlooking the waterfront.

Why not visit a volcano or two at Fuencaliente, 20 miles and about an hour's taxi ride from Santa Cruz. Volcan de Teneguia is still active whilst Volcan de San Antonio is more calm.

Not far from Santa Cruz is the lovely hill village of Las Nieves, with its fragrant citrus groves and 14th-century terracotta statue of Our Lady of the Snows, La Palma's patron saint.

Fresh seafood, in the local coriander or herb sauce (mojo verde), 'rancho Canaria' (a rich meat and vegetable stew) and 'cabrito al homo' (roast baby goat) are all popular dishes. For pudding, why not try 'bienmesabe' (a kind of almond egg custard).
Cruise Terminal
Ships dock at the Santa Cruz terminal, a pretty harbour easily explored on foot.

Most cruise lines offer shuttles from the terminal to the main port gate, it's a 5 minute walk into the centre of town.

Taxis are also available from the terminal.
