Overview Of The Port Of San Francisco

About San Francisco
San Francisco is located on the West Coast of the United States of America, at the north end of the San Francisco Peninsula.

Pier 39 is a collection of shops, restaurants and an aquarium. Whale-watching trips can also be booked here.

Check out the crab stands at Fisherman's Wharf and look out across the Bay to see Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge.

Ghirardelli Square, formerly a famous chocolate factory, is now a multi-level mall filled with shops and restaurants.

San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge attracts about nine million visitors each year.

Alcatraz (aka the Rock) is where some of the most notorious felons were sent from 1934 until 1963. It's essential to book tours in advance, especially during the busy summer months.

Chinatown is beyond the great big red and green gate on Grant Avenue. Inside you'll find a maze of restaurants, shops and a temple.

The Exploratorium is a hands on science museum, with something for all ages. It's located an easy walk from the cruise terminal.

Golden Gate Park, at 75,398 acres, is one of the largest inner-city national parks in the world. A must see in the park is the Japanese Tea Garden, a beautiful collection of waterfalls, bonsai trees and Japanese-style architecture. The park is home to the de Young Museum of Art and the California Academy of Sciences, home to a four-story rainforest, an aquarium and a planetarium.

Union Square is the centre of the city with many hotels, department stores, restaurants and boutiques framing the small park. The Theatre District is 3 blocks away. Art galleries in the area include the Xanadu Gallery located at 140 Maiden Lane.

Head over to SoMa (South of Market) for galleries, museums, shopping and plenty of entertainment.

Visit the GLBT History Museum, an opportunity to visit world-class exhibits related to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender history and culture.

Contemporary art lovers can head to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Around 12 miles beyond the Golden Gate is Muir Woods, located in Mill Valley. Follow marked trails through the ancient redwoods.

Take a 30 minute ferry ride to Sausalito, a seaside village on the Bay with art galleries, shops and restaurants.

Ocean Beach runs along the west coast of San Francisco, adjacent to Golden Gate Park. However, during the late spring and summer, San Francisco's characteristic foggy weather frequently envelops the beach, resulting in very cool temperatures. More beach friendly weather occurs in late fall and early spring, when fog is less prevalent.

Dungeness crab, King salmon and Pacific herring are some of the local catches. There is a wide range of choice here including Vietnamese, Mexican and Chinese. Locals particularly enjoy the soup dumplings (little bundles of rich broth and minced pork).
Cruise Terminal
Cruise ships now dock at the Port of San Francisco’s new James R. Herman Cruise Terminal at Pier 27. The two-story Cruise Terminal building has views to the Bay Bridge and back to the City skyline and Telegraph Hill.

Circulation for passenger drop-off, taxis, buses and provisioning all occur off the Embarcadero Roadway within the interior of the 13 acre pier. Passengers board ships via a new automated mobile gangway able to meet the varied door heights of new cruise ships.

Taxis are available and car hire is located in the city.

The San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni) runs the cable cars, buses and streetcars. You'll need exact change to ride.
