About San Diego
San Diego is located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean in Southern California, in the United States of America.

The Gaslamp Quarter is listed as an historic district on the National Register of Historic Places and is the site of several entertainment and night life venues.

San Diego Zoo features a 100 acre tropical garden with 4,000 animals of 800 species.

Explore Seaport Village's 50+ shops, numerous restaurants and outdoor entertainment. It is about a mile away from the cruise dock.

Horton Plaza is an upscale vertically-built urban shopping mall, a 10 minute walk away from the port, and is surrounded with little boutiques and restaurants. Souvenirs include sports memorabilia from local sports teams.

Balboa Park is a 1,200-acre park in the centre of San Diego and is home to some 15 museums including the San Diego Museum of Art and San Diego Natural History Museum, the Reuben H. Fleet Science Centre, San Diego Zoo and the historic Spreckels Organ Pavilion. There is a free tram that stops throughout the park and goes to the car park.

The USS Midway Museum is a maritime museum located at Navy Pier and features a collection of aircraft, many of which were built in Southern California.

San Diego has more than 20 missions, the most famous include Padre Junipero Serra's first mission in California and Mission San Diego de Alcala.

San Diego's Mission Beach and Pacific Beach boardwalks are a good place to people watch and hire skates, bikes and surfboards.

Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres, is located one block away in downtown San Diego's East Village.

Other options include SeaWorld San Diego, Legoland California and San Diego Wild Animal Park.

La Jolla, 25 minutes drive from the dock area, is known for luxury resorts, gorgeous beaches and expensive shops. For the more adventurous, you can climb the rocks surrounding Black's Beach.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is a great way to experience the desert. You can also arrange off-road adventures in four wheel drive jeeps.

During the winter months (December-March), visitors can go on whale watching tours.

Tijuana in Mexico is only 17 miles away. Whilst there, check out the Tijuana Cultural Centre. To get there, you can take the San Diego Trolley light rail, which runs from the city to the Mexican border. You must purchase special auto insurance to drive your own car in Mexico. (Note: Car hire firms usually do not permit renters to drive into Mexico).

Surfers can head to the North County beach cities of Solana Beach, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Encinitas and Leucadia, which have great surf conditions.

There is a wide range of cuisines available in the city ranging from Mexican, Italian and Seafood to Greek, Indian and French. Local specialities include 'carne asada' (grilled meat), fish tacos, enchiladas and 'ceviche' (marinated raw fish).

Cruise ships dock at the B Street Cruise Ship Terminal, right in the heart of downtown.

The downtown area is very compact and walkable. For attractions further afield there is a trolley and bus service and taxis are plentiful.
