About Rouen
Rouen is the capital of the Haute-Normandie region and the historic capital city of Normandy, France in western Europe.

At the Notre-Dame Cathedral, it's Tour de Beurre houses 56 bells. The Booksellers' Stairway features a stained glass window dating back to the 16th century. Richard the Lionheart is entombed in the Chapelle de la Vierge.

The Archbishop's Palace, behind the cathedral (place de la Cathedrale) is where the trial of Joan of Arc was held.

Musee des Beaux-Arts has a great collection of Impressionist paintings, including a Monet of the cathedral. (Closed Tuesdays).

At the Musee de la Ceramique, see collections of 17th and 18th century earthenware (Closed Tuesdays).

Musee Jeanne D'Arc traces the life of France's national heroine, Joan of Arc.

Take a walking tour around Rouen, available at the Tourist Office.

Petit Train runs daily from April to October, departing every hour from 10am-noon and 2-5pm from Cathedral Square. The guided tour is in French and English and takes in all the tourist areas of the city.

If you are heading to Paris, there are many options to choose from.

The iconic Eiffel Tower is an iron lattice tower, erected in 1889 and stands 324m high.

The Arc de Triomphe, another famous monument in Paris, stands 50m high in the centre of the Place Charles de Gaulle, at the western end of the Champs-Élysées.

Museums include Musee d'Orsay, Musee du Louvre and the Army Museum (Musee de l'Armee).

The Jardin du Luxembourg (Luxembourg Gardens) is the second largest public park in Paris. The park is the garden of the French Senate, which is itself housed in the Luxembourg Palace.

Notre-Dame Cathedral is widely considered to be one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture and among the largest and most well-known church buildings in the world.

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris (also known as Sacré-Cœur Basilica) is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The basilica is located at the summit of the butte Montmartre, the highest point in the city. Construction began in 1875 and was finished in 1914. It was consecrated after the end of World War I in 1919.

Day trips to Dieppe and the old fishing village of Honfleur are also possible from Rouen.

Rouen is the largest and oldest centre of ceramics in France so pieces from one of the factories here make good gifts. Another Rouen speciality is 'les coffret de Rouen', little hand painted wooden boxes. Rouen is also known for it's many antique shops. Chocolate lovers can indulge at La Chocolatière at 18 rue Guillaume-le-Conquérant.

Local dishes include lobster, scallops, foie gras and 'tartiflette' (potato, onion, cheese and lardon bake) as well as lots of delicious pastries such as eclairs and macaroons. (Note: restaurants may be closed between two and four weeks during August, so check ahead).
Cruise Terminal
Cruise ships dock at Port Rouen. The terminal has telephones, coffee shop and currency exchange.

Taxis are available outside the entrance. Journey time to the city centre is around 10 minutes or a 25 minute or so walk.

The Metrobus system operates through Rouen via buses and light rail.

Bikes can be borrowed through the city wide shared cycle service, Cy'clic.

It is about a 1 hour 15 minute journey by train to Paris from Rouen. Trains depart from Rive Droite Station on rue Jeanne-d'Arc.

Car hire is also available for exploring further afield, most use diesel but check beforehand.
