Overview Of The Port Of Riga

About Riga
Riga is the capital and largest city in Latvia, situated on the Baltic Sea.

Old Riga is on the UNESCO World Heritage list for its diverse architecture. Hours can be spent exploring the cobblestone streets and alleyways. The Dome Cathedral is the largest house of worship in the Baltics and home to one of the largest organs in Europe.

The city's Central Market (Centraltirgus) is housed in what were several huge former zeppelin hangars during WWI. Linens, leather goods, wooden toys and folk costumes are popular souvenirs.

The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia explains what life was like under the Nazis and Soviets in sometimes graphic, heart-wrenching detail.

On the edge of the city is the Open Air Ethnographic Museum which provides a look at traditional Latvian life.

Good shopping malls to explore include Stokmann and Origo at Central Station and Gallery Centra in Old Riga. The Tourist Information Office can be found in the Town Hall Square (Old Riga).

An hour from Riga is Jurmala Beach. Apart from the nice sandy beaches are restaurants, cafes, hotels and casinos, as well as Livi, the largest waterpark in the Baltics.

Local dishes include 'piragi' (onion and bacon dumplings) and 'rupjmaize' (dark rye bread). Latvian dishes use a lot of potato, cabbage, beef, pork and fish. International options are also widely available.
Cruise Terminal
Cruise ships dock at the Riga Passenger Terminal on the Daugava River. It's about a 15 minute walk into Old Riga. The terminal has a small cafe and a money exchange office.

Taxis are available at the pier.

There is a tram stop at the terminal, which takes you to the centre of the city, where car hire is available.
