Overview Of The Port Of Richards Bay

About Richards Bay
Richards Bay is a town in KwaZulu-Natal, situated on a lagoon in South Africa's Mhatuze River.

Part of this lagoon is a nature reserve surrounded by Richard’s Bay Park. Rare pink-backed pelicans, waders, cormorants and flamingos have been spotted in the area.

Lake Mzingazi, on the outskirts of Richards Bay is home to hippos and crocodiles, whilst the surrounding area is a bird-watchers paradise.

If staying overnight, take a romantic sunset cruise, rare humpback dolphins have often been spotted in the area.

There are many Game Reserves not far from Richards Bay, however many of the tours occur in the hottest part of the day when few animals can be seen.

Umlalazi Nature Reserve provides restricted access to beautiful beaches and a river. Amazing bird life, small animals, numerous walks, picnic spots, beach fishing and swimming makes it ideal for nature lovers.

Take a tour of the Veyane Cultural Village in the heart of a working Zulu community where tradition meets contemporary Zulu society just outside St Lucia. Meet the Sangoma (traditional healer) and experience the traditions of the Khula Village.

Families with children may enjoy Chané Cheese Farm where you can milk goats, join an educational tour and sample a variety of homemade organic cheeses or visit Isiphaphalazi Butterfly Dome (around 55km away) where butterflies indigenous to the local Dukuduku coastal forest can be seen.

Around 56km away from Richards Bay is the circular Igwala Gwala Forest Trail, which leads through coastal forest next to the estuary. Many species of birds can be seen including the yellow-rumped Tinkerbird, Goldentailed Woodpecker, Grey Waxbill and Green Twinspot. The trail is about 1.5km long, suitable for all ages and fitness levels and is part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site).

The beaches of Richards Bay are clean and relatively quiet, especially on weekdays. Alkantstrand has a lighthouse, outlook and a beach resort called Blue Flag. It’s open to the public and the warm waters here are perfect for safe swimming and bathing.

Other activities include fishing trips, horse and kayak safaris, a round of golf at the 18 Hole Mtunzini Country Club and for experienced surfers, try the challenge of pipe surfing along the pier. The waves here are fast and strong.

There are several shopping malls and speciality shops selling a range of items from furniture and collectibles to souvenirs such as wood carvings and local crafts.

Restaurants serve a variety of options from Indian, Thai and Italian cuisine to Sushi, seafood and steaks dishes.
Cruise Terminal
Cruise ships dock close to the centre of town.

Craft stalls and a tourist information are close by.
