Overview Of The Port Of Puerto Vallarta

About Puerto Vallarta
Puerto Vallarta is a resort city situated on the Pacific Ocean's Bahía de Banderas in Mexico.

Relax at one of the resort hotels.

The Malecon, the restored walkway that rings the bay, is known for its sculptures, including a 9ft bronze seahorse, high backed chairs ("La Rotunda del Mar") and "In Search of Reason" a tall ladder being climbed by two children, reaching down to a mother figure below. Opposite the main square is The Friendship Fountain, featuring three playful dolphins.

'El Centro' or downtown Puerto Vallarta, is filled with colonial architecture, a main square (Plaza de Armas) and the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

There are lots of tourist shops selling cheap silver jewellery, pottery and glassware. However it is possible to find good quality clothing, handicrafts and leather goods.

Rio Cuale Flea Market (El Centro, by the river) is a two story market, filled with vendor stalls. Stop here just before heading back to the ship for last minute bargains.

La Casa Del Tequila has a tasting bar and sells upscale shot glasses and tequila brands. It also has a charming restaurant offering freshly made quesadillas, salsas and tacos.

Explore the region's jungles and waterfalls via a bike excursion.

Whale watching, visiting a turtle camp or sea kayaking are also on offer.

Boca de Tomatlan is a quaint little village near Mismaloya, with shops and restaurants. Take a bus from El Centro (downtown) and spend the day here.

For golfers, there is the pricey Nicklaus-designed course at the Four Seasons Resort in Punta Mita and the Marina Vallarta Golf Club, with a jungle-like course featuring spectacular foliage, indigenous birds and iguanas.

There are many good beaches fronting the resorts along the Golden Zone hotel district, all walkable from the port.

Playa Mismaloya beach (a taxi ride away), set in a cove was the site of filming for "The Night of the Iguana."

Fresh seafood, fish, ribs, tostadas and tacos are favourites with both locals and visitors alike.
Cruise Terminal
Cruise ships either dock or anchor and tender passengers to the Marina Vallarta Maritime Terminal, around 3 miles north of downtown.

There are several restaurants near where the ships dock and a small craft market.

WalMart and a Sam's Club are directly across the main boulevard from the ship docking area, a 10 minute walk away.

There is an Internet Cafe, El Kiosko located in the adjacent Plaza Marisol and one at Plaza Neptuno in the marina.

Unmetered taxis line up around the docks, agree a price before setting off. The yellow taxis located outside the port gates are less expensive than those inside.

Buses can be found on the main road into the city (Av. Francisco Medina Ascencio).
